On Friday, June 22, Centra PACE’s Gretna location held a Lip Sync battle. Some staff at PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) engaged in the friendly competition to provide entertainment and fun for the senior citizens in their care. Participants selected various throwback songs – such as hits from Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, and a song from a popular sitcom called “Hee Haw” - that brought back memories from the elderly’s younger days, bringing nostalgic smiles to many wrinkled faces. Laughter rang out at the creative costumes and animated performances displayed.

PACE provides a variety of services to senior citizens who wish to remain independent by living at home. According to their website, “comprehensive services are delivered by a team of professionals made up of a primary care physician, registered nurses, a masters level social worker, health aides, transportation personnel, rehabilitation therapists, dietitians and recreation/activity personnel.” The staff provide both medical care, and care for social needs simultaneously. The Lip Synch battle was part of PACE’s Recreational Therapy program, and is just one of countless events organized regularly for seniors. “It’s a good opportunity for them to socialize,” Kendra Kerr, Gretna PACE center manager, says of the program’s importance. “Many of them, as they age, become more isolated, and this has been a really good opportunity to get out, to socialize with people, to see friends. And while they’re here, they also get medical care, they can have a hot meal. It’s a whole service we provide for them.” Other regular activities at PACE include games like Bingo, cards, horseshoe, and corn hole, as well as outings to dinner and movies. Sometimes, the movie watching occurs in the PACE center itself, complete with popcorn. “The best popcorn in the world,” according to 2-year PACE member Gladys Hall of Altavista, who enjoyed watching the Lip Sync battle with her friends.
