Tables adorned with bright bouquets and dainty tablecloths dotted Avoca’s shaded porch and indoor parlor, and warm sun illuminated the flourishing gardens as mothers and children of all ages flocked to Altavista’s Avoca Museum on Mother’s Day for the museum’s annual Mother’s Day Tea event.
Mother’s Day Tea at Avoca Museum has been a local annual tradition for over ten years, according to executive director Mike Hudson, becoming cherished by many. On this special day, mothers are admitted free of charge to spend time together with their families, enjoying tea, light refreshments, history, and live music.
“This is an annual event for us,” said Megan Rorer, who attended with both her mother and her own daughter, smiling with pride at having three generations represented. “I love being able to sit down with my own mom, and my daughter, and have the tea and stroll through the gardens, walk through the house…”
While some hold this event as tradition, this year marked a first experience at Avoca’s Mother’s Day Tea for others. Lorena Andress of Lynchburg was delighted to attend for the first time with her husband and youngest daughter. “They did a mother-daughter tea at our church, and I said this is so much fun!” she recalled. When a church friend informed her that Avoca Museum would also be hosting a Mother’s Day tea event, Andress was thrilled. “I told my family, you know what I want to do for Mother’s Day? This is what I want to do for Mother’s Day.”
While this tea event will not happen again until next year’s Mother’s Day, Avoca has other fun events planned for the rest of 2018. A full schedule of these events and other information can be found on their website at www.avocamuseum.org.
